Road Discomfort

The use of rented buses for bus service has recently emerged as an alternative to address transportation deficiencies.

Its implementation has sparked an intense debate among users who question whether this model is an effective solution or just a temporary fix. Many have reported drivers who speed, brake suddenly, ignore established stops, change routes without warning, and linger in areas where they have personal interests or connections. This extends travel times to an extreme and exasperating degree. In short, it’s mistreatment with no options.

For example, a trip from Havana to Bayamo usually takes around 12 hours. However, according to my own experience, it can take between 15 and 17 hours on a chartered bus service. Customers have no choice but to accept the situation because complaints are met with responses such as «You can get off if you want,» «No one forced you to get on here,» or «Don’t complain so much. Things are bad everywhere.»

On top of this, there is often a passenger overload and a lack of minimum standards for hygiene, convenience, and comfort.

There are also high prices—much higher than those of the state service—and a lack of clear regulation in this regard. This has left many users, especially those with fewer resources, at a disadvantage. A trip from Havana to eastern provinces can cost between 5,000 and 10,000 pesos per person. Could this be a solution for families whose income comes from state employment?

Excessive use of music at deafening volumes is also annoying. In several cases, the songs are in poor taste and obscene. Those playing the music do not consider the time of day (night or early morning), the discomfort it causes to children, the elderly, women (who are denigrated), people with different musical preferences, or those who simply want a quiet trip.

Despite the complaints, there is no rigorous control over these services. The authorities must monitor not only prices, but also travel conditions, driver behavior, and consideration for passengers. Without constant supervision, abuse and indiscipline will continue to prevail. We cannot continue down the wrong path.
